Ocasio-Cortez Faces Backlash Over Immigration Rights Webinar
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing mounting scrutiny over her involvement in a February webinar designed to educate immigrants on their legal rights during encounters with ICE agents. The bilingual event, held in English and Spanish, featured legal experts who walked attendees through crucial rights—such as the ability to remain silent and the requirement for ICE to present a warrant before entering a home.
Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that her goal was to provide clear, lawful information and connect vulnerable communities with pro bono legal support. Her office also distributed informational resources, including privacy release forms and legal aid contacts.
However, the webinar sparked controversy after former Trump administration official Tom Homan called for a Department of Justice investigation, suggesting the session could interfere with law enforcement efforts. In response, Ocasio-Cortez defended the event as a matter of First Amendment rights and has formally asked the DOJ for clarification—though no reply has yet been issued.
While supporters praise the congresswoman’s initiative as a vital public service, critics accuse her of potentially politicizing immigration issues. As of now, no official investigation has been announced.
